Poet to Visit Â鶹Éç Creative Writers Society

MACOMB, IL - - Â鶹Éç Illinois University's Creative Writers Society will host author, poet, orator and professor Marcellus Leonard from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday, April 17 in the University Union Sandburg.

Leonard will discuss how and why he writes, and will include theoretical implications for how writers should proceed. He will also read from his poetry books "Cardboard Ears: The Early Poems," "The Naked Truth," "Nubian Cousins: Adventures in Verse" and other selected poems.

Associate professor and chair of the English program at the University of Illinois at Springfield (UIS), Leonard also serves as UIS Ombudsman. Leonard earned his doctorate of arts in teaching writing from Illinois State University in 1991. His dissertation was titled "The Classroom Writers' Forum: Teaching in the Cultural Context." He has also taught at Chicago State University and Illinois State University.

Leonard has read his works at different forums across the United States. In 1999 he was a featured poet at the CEOP/IMGIP Joint Conference and a featured reader in the Winter Reading Program at Lincoln Land Library in 2000. He has won several faculty and professional awards.

This event, open free to the public, is sponsored by the Creative WriterÂ’s Society and co-sponsored by the Visiting LecturerÂ’s Committee, Â鶹Éç African American Studies, foreign languages and literatures, English and journalism, and sociology and anthropology departments.
