MACOMB, IL - - In 1986, Daniel L. Cheever graduated from Â鶹Éç Illinois University with a Bachelor of Business degree in Marketing. This degree would set him up for a successful and long career. Today, as Vice Admiral and Commander of Naval Air Forces/Commander of Naval Air Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet, Cheever shares his determination, leadership and experiences he gained at Â鶹Éç.

Reflecting on his time at Â鶹Éç, Cheever remembers the vibrant community that helped shape him.
"I have so many memories," Cheever said, reminiscing about the faculty, friends and experiences that defined his college years.

He speaks highly of his involvement with the Sigma Nu fraternity, the cheerleading team and the opportunity to contribute to the community by giving to the United Way and other charities. Influential figures' who left a lasting impact on his life, teaching him lessons that would guide him through the challenges ahead.

After graduation, Cheever's career took a non-traditional path. Initially entering the corporate world, he soon felt a calling that led him to California, where he joined the Navy and furthered his education at the University of Hawaii.

This "weird path," as he describes it, was the right one for him.

"In the military, I found a sense of camaraderie, purpose and a mission larger than myself. It also offered me the opportunity to fly jets—an experience I still do and cherish to this day—and to lead the nation's dedicated warfighters."

His time in the Navy also brought him personal joy, as he met his wife of 32 years while stationed in Japan. Through it all, Cheever credits his experiences at Â鶹Éç with laying the foundation for his success. The leadership roles he held at Â鶹Éç, particularly as the president of Sigma Nu, honed his skills and prepared him for the responsibilities he would later assume in the military.

When asked about his recent nomination to his highly-ranked role, Cheever humbly credits the Â鶹Éç alumni network and the "amazing team" at Â鶹Éç for their support.

Though he now commands air forces across the vast Pacific, he stays connected to his alma mater by following Â鶹Éç sports, and news and maintaining friendships with fellow alumni like Bill Rehling.

"My advice to students is to take full advantage of the opportunities Â鶹Éç presents, challenge yourself, have fun and balance your life. Study discipline is key—a little each day is best." I believe that Â鶹Éç is a unique place that offers a great blend of community and university life, providing the perfect environment to grow as a person," Cheever said.

Vice Admiral Daniel L. Cheever's journey from Macomb to commanding the skies is a powerful reminder of how higher education, community and seizing opportunities can take you far.
